UK Braces for Heatwave, Potentially Hotter Than Barbados

Published on

Parts of the United Kingdom are expected to experience heatwave conditions, potentially surpassing temperatures in the Caribbean island of Barbados. Forecasts indicate that some regions could reach up to 32C in the warmest spots, with temperatures climbing steadily into the high 20s throughout the week. Southern and southeastern England are likely to experience heatwave temperatures by June 20 and 21, with other southern parts of the country possibly hitting 30C by June 19.

The Met Office defines a heatwave as three consecutive days with maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding specific thresholds. These thresholds vary between 25C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of southwestern England, and 28C in London and its surrounding areas.

Barbados is predicted to see temperatures ranging from 26C to 30C on Sunday. The south and southeast of England may experience even higher temperatures on Monday, possibly reaching 33C in certain areas, according to the Met Office.

Despite the high temperatures, intermittent spells of rain are expected, particularly in northern and western regions, with a slight possibility of thunderstorms in southeastern England. A yellow heat health alert has been issued for parts of the UK, indicating a heightened risk to vulnerable individuals and an increased demand for healthcare services. Higher indoor temperatures are anticipated, along with potential water-related incidents such as cold water shock and drowning.

Gregory Wolverson, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, stated that the contrasting weather pattern this week involves unsettled conditions in the northwest while heat builds in the south and east. As the weekend approaches, more settled conditions are expected with rising temperatures across southern and eastern England, likely meeting heatwave criteria. Although sunny skies may not be consistent due to increased cloud cover, there is a possibility of thunderstorms in various areas later in the day, bringing heavy showers and localized impacts.

The Met Office advised caution for individuals heading to the coast due to sea-surface temperatures being lower than mid-summer levels. Tragically, 15 fatalities were reported from incidents in open water during a previous hot spell in late May and early June.
