“Blackadder Star Tony Robinson Reveals 14-Year Prostate Cancer Battle”

Published on

Tony Robinson has opened up about the challenging reality of prostate cancer. The renowned actor, famous for his role as Baldrick in the BBC sitcom Blackadder, disclosed that he was diagnosed with the disease more than ten years ago and regularly undergoes tests, including MRI scans, to monitor his condition.

Despite stating that he is doing well, the 79-year-old acknowledged the existing stigma surrounding men getting tested for prostate cancer. Diagnosis typically involves a PSA blood test, a digital rectal examination, and a biopsy if necessary.

Reflecting on his experience, Tony shared, “I’ve been living with prostate cancer for 13 or 14 years now, and it’s always been fine, but I do have these checks.” He emphasized the misconception among men about the testing process, highlighting that the traditional rectal examination is no longer commonly used.

During an appearance on A Night In With Sally Lindsay, the actor expressed his commitment to raising awareness about the importance of regular checks. He mentioned reaching out to the prostate society to advocate for spreading information, noting that most individuals undergo MRI scans every few years.

Comparing his medical evaluations to the health checks actors undergo before starting a new project, Tony emphasized the necessity of proactive health monitoring. He stressed the significance of early detection, stating, “Those checks are brilliant, though. They box tick everything. It’s such a vile disease.”

According to the NHS, prostate cancer predominantly affects men aged 50 and above. The cancer typically develops on the outer part of the prostate, initially causing minimal symptoms. However, as the cancer progresses, symptoms may include difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, urgency to urinate, and other signs like erectile dysfunction and back pain.

While treatment may not be necessary for localized or slow-growing prostate cancer, options such as surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy are available for more advanced cases.

In a previous interview discussing his time on Blackadder, Tony expressed gratitude for his role in the iconic series and credited Richard Curtis for his writing influence. He described the experience as a blessing and highlighted the support he received from his colleagues.

For individuals affected by prostate cancer, support and guidance can be sought from organizations like Macmillan Cancer Support and Prostate Cancer UK.
