A massive illegal waste dump, weighing 7,500 tonnes, was uncovered near a football stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Drone footage revealed a vast expanse of household and commercial waste spread out on a section of land close to Valley Parade. The dump, extending for about half the length of a football field, featured numerous black bin bags, towering heaps of rubbish, and rusting containers, with even the back portion of a large truck visible.
This sprawling dump, measuring 50 meters in length, was situated opposite the home ground of Bradford City FC in Manningham. Locals became alarmed during a recent heatwave when a foul odor permeated the area, prompting them to keep windows and doors shut. The Environment Agency (EA) has initiated an investigation into the matter and is actively working to identify the individuals responsible for this illegal act.
Residents reported observing unfamiliar trucks entering the site during early mornings and evenings, coinciding with the noxious smell that enveloped the neighborhood. Following the residents’ concerns, Manningham’s Independent councillors expressed their deep dismay over the situation, condemning the blatant disregard for the community and the environment. They emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal waste dumping in Manningham and expressed hope for holding the culprits accountable.
The EA confirmed receiving reports on July 1 concerning the dumping of multiple tonnes of mixed household and commercial waste. Collaborating with Bradford Council, West Yorkshire Police, and West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the EA is actively pursuing leads to locate the responsible parties and ensure the site’s proper containment. Ben Hocking, the EA’s area environment manager, emphasized the agency’s commitment to combatting waste crime and swiftly addressing illegal activities to safeguard communities.
Bradford Council’s executive member for neighborhoods and communities, Cllr Ian Walker, affirmed the council’s support for the ongoing investigation led by the Environment Agency. Walker reiterated the council’s dedication to assisting in the resolution of this environmental concern and ensuring that the perpetrators face consequences for their actions.
