“Beware: Squishy Toys in Hot Cars Causing Explosions”

Published on

Parents are being cautioned to ensure that children do not leave squishy toys in hot cars to prevent potential accidents. Several cases have been reported where kids suffered burns as a result of these toys exploding. These toys, containing a liquid gel, have made headlines as children have experienced explosions when microwaving them, causing injuries to their faces and hands.

Recently, incidents have surfaced of children getting hurt when these toys burst after being left unattended in a car on a scorching day. In West Virginia, USA, a 13-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital this week after a squishy toy left in a car exploded, drenching her in hot liquid that adhered to her skin and couldn’t be removed easily.

According to the girl’s mother, Kimmie Staggs, medical staff had to use saline to remove the gel from her daughter’s skin to avoid causing further harm. Another teenager in New Mexico also had to seek medical attention following a similar incident.

Experts like Matt Clamp from Scrap Car Comparison have highlighted the risks associated with leaving gel-filled toys in hot cars. With UK temperatures soaring, parked cars can quickly reach temperatures over 50°C, causing these toys to soften and burst. The gel in these toys can be dangerous as it sticks to the skin, requiring immediate medical attention if a burst occurs.

It is crucial to be cautious as multiple incidents of toy explosions have been reported over the past few years. These incidents can not only cause injuries to children but also lead to significant damage to the car’s interior. Stubborn stains from melted gel can be costly to remove, impacting the vehicle’s resale value.

Moreover, it’s essential to remember that squishy toys are not the only items affected by extreme heat in vehicles. Items like aerosols, batteries, medicines, chocolate, and plastic water bottles can also pose risks. Conducting a quick inspection before leaving or driving the car during hot weather can help prevent injuries and costly damages.

As temperatures are expected to rise during the ongoing heatwave, authorities such as the Met Office have issued warnings. Trading Standards have also cautioned against heating squishy toys in microwaves due to the risks of explosions and burns. It is advised to refrain from this practice to ensure the safety of children.
