Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman Barred from Flight Due to Passport Issue

Published on

Actress Tracy-Ann Oberman recently shared a cautionary tale about passport validity issues experienced while attempting to board a Ryanair flight. The 59-year-old, renowned for her role as Chrissie Watts on EastEnders, disclosed that despite having a passport valid for nearly a year, she was barred from boarding due to updated European regulations.

In a social media post earlier this month, Oberman expressed her frustration: “Just tried boarding a flight to Spain. My passport runs out June 2027. Was refused boarding because apparently it ran out in 2026 according to new European rules. Can anyone explain this to me? I’m now stuck.” She further elaborated that despite having a full year left on her passport, the airline informed her it was not acceptable under the new regulations.

Responding to the situation, a fellow traveler explained that passports are only valid for 10 years from the date of issue, regardless of the expiration date. Oberman acknowledged her lack of awareness on this matter, highlighting the lack of prominent alerts during the ticket booking process.

Concerns were raised about potential fines for airlines accommodating passengers with passports exceeding the 10-year validity rule. While Ryanair has not yet provided a statement on the issue, it is crucial for travelers to understand that any additional months added to a passport’s expiry date from a previous renewal are disregarded for EU travel purposes.

Despite the cosmetic features like the burgundy color and “European Union” label on the passport cover, the document’s validity is contingent on meeting post-Brexit standards. Since the UK Passport Office used to extend up to 9 months of unused validity on early renewals before September 2018, travelers must ensure their passports adhere to the 10-year issue date rule and the 3-month expiry rule to navigate smoothly within the EU and the Schengen Area.
