“Child Tragically Dies in Hot Car on Spanish Island”

Published on

A tragic incident on a Spanish holiday island has claimed the life of a 20-month-old toddler who reportedly died of heatstroke after being left in a car during extreme temperatures. The child was initially taken to Fuerteventura General Hospital in a serious condition before being transferred by air ambulance to a public hospital on Gran Canaria island. Unfortunately, the boy passed away at the Materno Infantil University Hospital in the capital city of Las Palmas.

While details are still scarce, local reports suggest that the boy was left inside the vehicle. The incident occurred amidst soaring temperatures, with the Canary Islands experiencing temperatures as high as 45C due to an ongoing heatwave that has affected the region for several days. Gran Canaria was placed on red alert, while parts of Tenerife were on orange alert due to the intense heat.

In a similar tragic event last month, an 18-month-old girl named Sofia lost her life after being left inside a licensed nursery transport vehicle near Lisbon for seven hours. The child was reportedly forgotten inside the vehicle parked near a popular tourist spot, the Cristo Rei shrine in Almada. Despite numerous tourists passing by, the girl went unnoticed behind closed windows in the sweltering 30C heat.

After the child’s mother discovered her missing, emergency services were alerted, but the girl was found in critical condition and could not be revived. The incident led to an investigation into the nursery, identified as Colegio Mestre Cuco. These heartbreaking incidents serve as a grim reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, particularly during periods of extreme heat.

Furthermore, tragic incidents involving children being left in cars have also been reported in other parts of the world, such as the case of two children aged two and four found dead in a family car in Carpentras, France, during a heatwave in June. These heartbreaking events highlight the importance of heightened awareness and vigilance to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
