“PM Burnham Considers Public Inquiry into Epstein & Al Fayed UK Activities”

Published on

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly exploring the possibility of initiating a public inquiry into the UK activities of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as stated by the victims minister. Alex Davies-Jones revealed during an interview with BBC Newsnight that Burnham has agreed to meet with Epstein’s victims and is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Additionally, there is ongoing consideration for a potential inquiry into the alleged behavior of former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed.

Allegations of sexual misconduct against Al Fayed span from 1977 to 2014, with more than 400 claims including sexual assault, rape, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking. The Metropolitan Police are currently looking into at least 156 individuals who reported being victims of Al Fayed, 21 of whom came forward prior to his passing in 2023 at the age of 94.

When asked about the potential for a public inquiry, Davies-Jones stated, “We are examining this closely, evaluating the options…similarly for Harrods survivors. There is already an ongoing official inquiry for victims of grooming gangs. I have been assured that the Prime Minister is treating this matter seriously. He will engage with the victims and is exploring the available courses of action now that he has full access to information as Prime Minister.”

Davies-Jones had resigned as justice minister in May, citing a lack of decisive action under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but later resumed the role under Burnham’s administration. She emphasized that before joining Burnham’s team, she had received commitments that victim welfare would be prioritized.

Expressing hope for positive change, Epstein survivor Lisa Phillips voiced her expectations for the meeting with Burnham to signal a new era where survivors are listened to, lessons are heeded, institutions are held accountable, and lasting reforms safeguard future generations.
