“13-Year-Old Dies After Contaminated Cheese Tragedy”

Published on

A 13-year-old boy, Mattia Maestri from Italy, passed away after consuming contaminated cheese that led to a severe E.coli infection in June 2017. The tragic incident left him in a vegetative state for nine years. His family has been in a legal battle against those accountable, including the cheese factory and healthcare professionals involved in his care.

Giovanni Battista Maestri, the father of the deceased teenager, announced the sorrowful news of his son’s demise. He expressed gratitude for the support during this difficult time. Mattia ingested a piece of ‘Due Laghi’ cheese, produced from raw milk in Trentino, at the age of four. The father alleges that errors in the milk collection process caused the contamination.

Mattia developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe condition linked to E.coli, leading to the breakdown of red blood cells and potential blood clot formation affecting vital organs, including the brain. He eventually entered an irreversible vegetative state, enduring numerous health complications.

Legal action resulted in two individuals from the dairy being convicted of causing harm. Giovanni established a consumer group and authored a book to raise awareness about the risks associated with unpasteurized dairy products. The book was presented to the Italian parliament to prevent similar tragedies.

The family’s lawyers filed a complaint for negligent homicide, highlighting the prolonged suffering endured by Mattia and his parents. Mattia’s funeral was held in Coredo, where many gathered to honor his memory. Father Raymond Marcieca described Mattia as an angel who faced a challenging ordeal.

Teachers paid tribute to Mattia, remembering his impact on their lives and emphasizing the value of life. The article also advises on ways to prevent E.coli infections, cautioning against unpasteurized products and highlighting common sources of E.coli contamination. Britons are urged to seek medical assistance if symptoms of E.coli infection arise.
