Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad residing in Toronto, shared his experience of stumbling upon an international whistling contest while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued, he signed himself and his daughter, Sumire, up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a lighthearted activity during the early months of 2022.

Both Shannon and Sumire had a knack for whistling, a skill passed down from previous generations. Encouraged by their proficiency, they submitted audition tapes to the Masters of Musical Whistling and were pleasantly surprised to make the cut. However, their initial casual approach took a serious turn when they learned the competition would be held in person in Los Angeles.

Seeking guidance, Shannon scheduled a coaching session with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. After a thorough review of their audition tapes, Kaufman emphasized the need for dedicated practice and performance-oriented whistling to excel in the competition.

Motivated by the challenge and setting a positive example for his daughter, Shannon embarked on a rigorous training regimen, practicing whistling daily for over a month. With their preparations in full swing, they traveled to Hollywood for the prestigious Masters of Musical Whistling competition.

The event showcased an array of talented whistlers from around the globe, each bringing a unique flair to the stage. Shannon was particularly struck by the artistry on display, which transcended mere entertainment and embraced whistling as a fine art form.

Despite his initial ironic demeanor from his teenage years, Shannon found himself shedding layers of detachment and embracing the genuine passion and dedication exhibited by his fellow contestants and his daughter, who outshined him in pitch accuracy.

Taking the stage with Sumire, Shannon’s performance of “It’s Not a Moon” earned him a gold medal in the adult category, while Sumire secured a silver medal for her rendition of the theme from “Doraemon.” The experience left Shannon reflecting on the significance of wholeheartedly pursuing one’s passions without fear of judgment.

The journey to the Masters of Musical Whistling competition taught Shannon the value of embracing authenticity and committing wholeheartedly to endeavors that spark joy and fulfillment, even if they may seem unconventional.
