The union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has given a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike amidst a busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees states that significant differences remain unresolved between the two parties.

Chair of the union’s WestJet contingent, Alia Hussain, emphasized the need for necessary changes and fair negotiations in a recent press release. Hussain expressed hope for a resolution without a strike, highlighting ongoing efforts to negotiate around the clock.

In response to the union’s strike notice, WestJet has issued a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline, Canada’s second-largest, continues active negotiations to reach a mutual agreement.

WestJet CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, regretted the inconvenience caused to guests due to the strike situation. While the union’s notice does not guarantee a strike, potential job action could commence if an agreement is not reached by Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT.

Passengers facing potential disruptions due to the strike have been offered flexibility by WestJet, allowing changes or cancellations without fees for flights scheduled between July 30 and Aug. 4. Regional flights with WestJet Encore and code-share partners like Delta Air Lines are expected to operate normally during any strike.

Both parties have also established protocols for grounding planes and assisting cabin crew in case of a work stoppage. Key issues cited by the union include unpaid ground duties, while WestJet argues that all duties are compensated through a credit hour system rather than hourly wages.

Despite ongoing talks, the airline faces significant financial losses if a strike occurs during the peak summer travel period. WestJet operates over 600 daily flights, catering to a substantial number of passengers on a regular basis.
