A remarkable feature of the natural world, the narwhal tusk is a unique structure that can grow up to three meters in length. Unlike other mammal tusks, the narwhal’s tusk grows perfectly straight without any curves, protruding through the whale’s lip on the left side.

An international team of researchers has uncovered the mystery behind the straight growth of the narwhal tusk, attributing it to the distinctive pattern of opposing spirals. The study, led by Henrik Birkedal from Aarhus University in Denmark, revealed two spirals— one clockwise and the other counterclockwise— that contribute to the tusk’s straight form.

The research, recently published in the journal Nature Communications, delves into the intricate molecular structure of the narwhal tusks. Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, the team utilized advanced imaging techniques similar to CT scans to uncover the dual spirals present in the tusk layers.

The narwhal tusks, primarily found in male narwhals, are composed of dentine and cementum, resembling human teeth without the enamel layer. This discovery not only explains the straightness of the tusk but also holds potential insights into the structural principles of human bones and similar biological instances.

Renowned narwhal biologist Martin Nweeia, from Harvard University, expressed enthusiasm for the research’s exploration of the unique narwhal tooth. While acknowledging the multifunctionality of teeth, Nweeia’s previous research has highlighted the tusk’s main role as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding purposes.

Looking ahead, Nweeia hopes for future research projects on narwhals to involve off-season studies and collaboration with Indigenous communities, emphasizing the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with scientific research.
