Stephen Colbert Shaves Beard on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Published on

After winning an Emmy, former “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert made his first late-night TV appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” since CBS canceled his show earlier this year. Colbert received a warm reception from the audience, with Kimmel joking about his return being akin to a shark going back to its natural habitat. During the interview, Colbert expressed relief at being away from the daily news grind, no longer having to consume negative content regularly.

The conversation steered clear of deep political commentary, offering a lighthearted and comedic atmosphere. Kimmel briefly mentioned U.S. President Donald Trump in his monologue related to Colbert’s show cancellation but did not dwell on political topics during the interview. Colbert appeared relaxed and joyful, emphasizing comedy over political analysis, a departure from his previous late-night persona.

The interview took a personal turn as Colbert discussed his beard, revealing that his wife dislikes it and it affects their kisses due to its prickliness. Promising to shave it off if he won an Emmy, Colbert fulfilled his promise on air with Kimmel’s assistance, creating a humorous moment. Additionally, Colbert shared details about a film project he is working on with his son, a new creative venture outside of television.

Colbert’s appearance showcased a different side of him post-“Late Show,” highlighting his lighter and more playful demeanor. The interview concluded with Colbert gifting Kimmel a prop Captain America shield, symbolizing their friendship and camaraderie. Colbert humorously mentioned his newfound free time and lack of daily news responsibilities, hinting at a more relaxed lifestyle post-show cancellation.

CBS ended “The Late Show” in May 2026, citing financial reasons, although speculation arose due to Colbert’s public criticism of the network’s parent company settling a lawsuit with President Trump. Despite the show’s cancellation, Colbert seemed content with the change, embracing a new chapter in his career beyond nightly political satire.
