“P.E.I. Residents Concerned as Tar Spots Threaten Trees”

Published on

The recent cool and damp spring weather on Prince Edward Island has led to the development of tar spots on some trees, causing concerns among residents. Kurt Laird, a certified arborist at Laird Tree Care, has noticed an increase in reports from Islanders about their trees prematurely losing leaves, giving their yards an autumnal appearance.

The tar spot fungus is affecting Norway maple trees, an invasive species in the province, creating black spots that block the tree’s water supply and trigger leaf shedding. Laird explained that rain spreads the fungal spores, which penetrate the leaves’ soft tissue, leading to gradual but eventually visible damage over time.

According to a statement from the province, tar spots are a common fungal disease primarily seen on Norway maples, commonly planted in municipal areas on the island. While the disease does not pose a safety risk, treatment is typically unnecessary.

Laird noted that the last few springs in P.E.I. have been dry, causing the tar spots to manifest later in the year. He emphasized the importance of maintaining tree health and removing fallen leaves to prevent further spread of the fungus.

Treating trees affected by tar spots can be challenging, as using leaf sprays or fungicides may not effectively combat the disease during damp conditions. Laird advised that while fungicide spraying can offer some help, finding suitable products due to pesticide restrictions is difficult. The key recommendation is to focus on tree health maintenance and proper disposal of fallen leaves to mitigate the impact of tar spots.
