A man has revealed the reasons behind his ongoing visits to his ex-wife, despite the tragic incident where she took the lives of their five children.

Back in June 2001, Rusty Yates, a NASA engineer, left for work at the Johnson Space Centre, unaware of the tragedy that would soon unfold at home. His wife, Andrea Yates, who was battling severe postpartum psychosis and schizophrenia, carried out a horrific act after he departed for the day. She drowned their children, Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary, and then informed emergency services before contacting Rusty, confessing to the unimaginable crime upon his return.

Following one of the most shocking cases in American history, Andrea Yates faced five counts of capital murder, with prosecutors initially seeking the death penalty. However, her defense argued successfully that due to her severe mental health issues post-childbirth, she required mental health treatment instead of imprisonment.

In 2002, Yates was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. After an appeal and retrial in 2006, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Yates now resides in a mental health facility in Kerrville, Texas, where she reportedly continues to express delusional beliefs, including her thoughts about the tragic event.

Despite their history, Rusty, who divorced Andrea in 2005, maintains a relationship with her, visiting her annually and keeping in touch via texts and calls. He shared in an interview that they cherish the memories of their past together and that Andrea is the only person he can discuss those times with, highlighting her caring and devoted nature.
