Labour’s Liz Kendall Vows Support Amid AI Job Losses

Published on

In a recent address, Liz Kendall acknowledged the inevitability of job losses resulting from artificial intelligence (AI) but assured the public of her commitment to assisting individuals in transitioning to new employment opportunities. Drawing parallels to the industrial transformations of the 1980s, the Technology Secretary emphasized the importance of not repeating past mistakes that neglected affected communities. Kendall affirmed that the Labour party’s approach to the AI-driven job market would prioritize supporting workers through this transition period.

While acknowledging the creation of new job opportunities by AI, Kendall candidly stated that some jobs would be displaced. Unlike the laissez-faire approach of the Conservatives in the 1980s, Labour’s stance is centered on providing comprehensive support to individuals and communities navigating the changing job landscape. The party aims to leverage AI for job creation and economic growth while ensuring workers are equipped to adapt. Kendall stressed the importance of protecting communities from the negative repercussions of industrial shifts and fostering a future where more people are guided into improved employment within a flourishing economy.

When questioned about the specific sectors that may face job losses, Kendall acknowledged the mixed evidence on the matter. While concerns exist about certain fields like law and finance, Kendall highlighted the emergence of new job roles as well. She underscored the necessity of proactive measures to guide individuals through these transitions, drawing from historical lessons that necessitate a strategic and supportive plan.

Kendall highlighted the government’s recent initiative to provide free courses for adults to acquire essential AI skills. Additionally, she disclosed plans to establish a Future of Work unit within the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology in collaboration with the Confederation of British Industry and the Trade Union Congress. This unit will focus on analyzing AI’s impact on the labor market and delivering practical assistance to those affected. Kendall also expressed her ambition to position Britain as a leading adopter of AI among the G7 nations.
