“Miscarriage Patient Receives Painful Reminder Letter”

Published on

A grieving business owner was shocked to receive a notification from the NHS about a scheduled pregnancy scan just two weeks after her heartbreaking miscarriage. Abi Evans, who was pregnant, went through the devastation of discovering an empty pregnancy sac during her 10-week scan on January 20. Despite being assured by Gloucestershire Royal Hospital staff that her upcoming appointments would be canceled, Abi was surprised to get a reminder letter from the NHS shortly after her loss, which she described as “a punch in the gut.”

Expressing her disappointment, Abi mentioned that she had been promised by the hospital staff that all future appointments would be called off. She recounted her emotional experience, stating, “At my follow-up appointment for a second scan to confirm the empty sac, I specifically inquired about the cancellation of future appointments and was assured that it would be taken care of.” Although she appreciated the kindness and understanding of the hospital staff, the reminder letter stirred up painful emotions for her, reminding her of the stage her pregnancy should have been.

Following a diagnosis of missed miscarriage, Abi opted for medical intervention. She shared details of her medical journey, mentioning the initial positive signs of a healthy pregnancy and the subsequent discovery of a subchorionic hematoma. After experiencing a concerning episode post-Christmas, Abi sought medical advice, leading to the distressing revelation that the pregnancy sac was empty during a subsequent scan.

Abi and her partner, Jevan Brown, were thrilled when they initially discovered the pregnancy, despite not actively planning for it. Reflecting on her interactions with the hospital staff throughout her experience, Abi praised their care and support, emphasizing the need for improved communication between departments to prevent distressing reminders like the letter she received.

In response to the incident, a spokesperson from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital expressed regret for the oversight and extended apologies to Abi Evans. The hospital assured a review of their processes to avoid similar occurrences in the future, emphasizing their commitment to providing exceptional care to all patients. Abi was encouraged to reach out to the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) for further investigation of her concerns.
