Trump Warns of China Trade Deal Threatening Canadian Hockey

Published on

President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Canadians regarding potential consequences of a new trade agreement with China. Trump expressed concerns that such a deal could lead to the eradication of ice hockey in Canada, the country’s national sport. The US President made these remarks in a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform.

Accusing Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney of seeking a trade deal with China, Trump claimed that one of the first actions China might take is to eliminate all ice hockey activities in Canada. In addition, Trump asserted that China could also permanently remove The Stanley Cup, the prestigious international NHL trophy.

The contentious post, comprising 295 words, was directed at criticizing his northern neighbors following Carney’s recent trade deal with China, which came after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods in 2025. Trump warned that making a deal with China could harm Canada economically, leaving the US with unfavorable outcomes.

Furthermore, Trump threatened to block the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit until the US receives adequate compensation and fair treatment from Canada. He criticized the bridge project, claiming that former President Obama had agreed to it under unfavorable terms, despite Trump endorsing it in a joint statement with Canada’s then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2017.

This recent confrontation is part of a series of disagreements between Trump and Canadians, particularly due to Carney’s efforts to strengthen trade ties with China in response to US tariffs on Canadian imports. Trump previously criticized Canada for reducing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower import taxes on Canadian agricultural products, threatening significant tariffs as a consequence.

In a separate post, Trump even mentioned the possibility of absorbing Canada into the US, offering different scenarios for the country’s future relationship with the United States. These developments occur within a broader context of contentious foreign relations involving the US, including Trump’s threats of tariffs on European countries and discussions about Greenland’s potential takeover, which were later retracted following claimed progress in negotiations.
