UK Bracing for Major Snowstorm; London, Edinburgh, and Manchester to be Hit

A significant amount of snow is expected to fall in the UK by the end of the week, with weather models indicating the approach of a large blizzard.

The GFS weather model predicts that snow will blanket the UK starting on Sunday, affecting regions across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, including major cities like London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle, Belfast, and Edinburgh.

The snowfall is forecasted to begin in Northern Ireland and western areas early Sunday morning, gradually moving eastward throughout the day. By 6 am, heavy snow is projected to cover Wales, Scotland, north-west England, the West Midlands, and parts of southern England.

Later in the day, snow showers are expected in London, Yorkshire, and the north-east, with the heaviest snowfall anticipated in Southampton. The snow front is anticipated to move towards the North Sea by 6 pm, affecting East Anglia as well, potentially leaving snow covering about 90% of the country by day’s end.

Snow coverage maps indicate that most areas will have snow accumulation, except for some parts of the south-west of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The forecast suggests significant snow depths, with up to 21cm in Scottish hills, 14cm in northern England, and 5cm in the Midlands and parts of Wales.

Looking ahead, the Met Office mentions the possibility of colder conditions affecting certain UK regions later in the month. The forecast for February 14 to 23 points to the return of unsettled weather patterns with rain and strong winds, though milder conditions could prevail in some areas.

BBC Weather’s outlook for the following week suggests potential shifts in atmospheric patterns, leading to milder air across the UK, while Scotland may experience colder temperatures. Wet and windy weather is expected, possibly causing local flooding issues in the south-western UK, with chances of snow in northern areas and wintry showers in hilly regions.
