“Majority of Brits Support Assisted Dying Bill: Survey”

Published on

A recent survey revealed that despite extensive discussions on assisted dying, the majority of Brits, around eight out of ten, still back the proposed legislation. The public sentiment remains unchanged even after prolonged debates in Parliament.

Louise Shackleton, a widow who accompanied her husband to Dignitas for assisted dying, expressed her lack of surprise at the unyielding support for the bill. She criticized the debates as “disgusting and insulting” based on her observations.

The survey conducted by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) indicated that 79% of respondents believe in allowing assisted dying. This sentiment aligns with the British Social Attitudes survey, demonstrating consistent support for a legal change.

Despite ongoing debates and scrutiny in the House of Lords, public opinion on assisted dying has remained steadfast. The proposed Westminster Bill’s introduction has not significantly altered the public’s stance, highlighting a long-standing consensus on the issue.

Advocates for the bill emphasize the urgent need for compassionate legislation, emphasizing that the time for action is now. The proposed law would enable terminally ill adults in England and Wales with a life expectancy of fewer than six months to apply for assisted death, subject to approval by medical professionals and a multidisciplinary panel.

While the Bill faces opposition in the House of Lords, critics argue that the legislation is inadequate in its current form and requires substantial amendments to ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals. The debate surrounding assisted dying continues, with supporters calling for timely and decisive action to address the pressing needs of terminally ill patients.
