A mother reveals that doctors initially suspected her of harming her own infant due to multiple unexplained fractures, only to later discover that the baby has a rare medical condition. Kendra Larsen and her husband Eric faced scrutiny when their newborn daughter, Hadley, sustained injuries.

Hadley suffers from a rare condition known as “China doll syndrome,” causing her bones to be extremely fragile and prone to breaking easily. She has endured a total of 148 fractures due to Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), commonly referred to as brittle bone disease, which hinders collagen production necessary for bone strength.

Initially, the parents were unaware of Hadley’s condition. Kendra, 44, from Idaho Falls, Idaho, shared that they sought medical help when Hadley was only four weeks old, suspecting hip dysplasia. However, X-rays revealed multiple fractures in Hadley’s body, leading to suspicions of abuse.

The situation intensified as medical professionals raised concerns about potential harm caused to Hadley. Kendra recounted a distressing moment when they were questioned about inflicting brain damage on their child. The family found themselves under suspicion of child abuse, shifting the focus away from Hadley’s medical needs.

Fortunately, a pediatrician familiar with OI intervened, advocating for Hadley’s condition and dispelling abuse allegations. Despite this, the parents endured a challenging four-month period of tests and inquiries before receiving a definitive diagnosis.

The diagnosis brought relief but also sadness, as it marked the beginning of a difficult journey for their daughter. Kendra emphasized the importance of awareness for rare conditions like OI to prevent families from enduring similar distressing situations.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Kendra acknowledged the resilience and inspiration found in Hadley’s journey. She highlighted how their once-questioned baby has grown into a remarkable individual, demonstrating strength and positivity despite her challenging start in life.
