The songwriter responsible for Liam Payne’s song, “Live Forever,” has shared that the inspiration for the track stemmed from a fall off a hotel balcony. Preston, the lead singer of The Ordinary Boys, revealed that the song was born out of his own brush with death when he tumbled from a second-story hotel balcony in Denmark in 2017 following heavy drinking.
Subsequently, he passed the song on to Liam, who released it in 2019, predating the One Direction star’s own tragic fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina in 2024. Preston expressed astonishment at the uncanny resemblance between the circumstances of Liam’s accident and the song’s backstory.
In a recent interview, Preston described the situation as almost too surreal to comprehend. He remarked, “I gave the song to Liam, and then he falls off a balcony and dies. There are certain events in life that are beyond belief.”
Speaking to The Guardian, Preston portrayed Liam as “a very humorous, kind, and talented individual.” He mentioned, “I saw a lot of myself in him as we both faced challenges. I wish I could have done more, but I don’t believe I played a role in providing intervention in his life.”
Preston expressed regret that he couldn’t have done more to help and hoped the song’s lyrics would serve as a cautionary tale. He explained, “‘Live Forever’ was my way of saying: ‘Hey, this happened to me.’ But offering advice is challenging if the recipient isn’t prepared to accept it.”
Following his own accident, Preston endured multiple fractures and a punctured lung, with initial concerns from doctors that he might never regain the ability to walk. After six months in a wheelchair and numerous surgeries involving metal plates, he eventually recovered, as reported by the Mirror.
However, he later developed a dependency on painkillers prescribed post-accident. He described that period as marked by “dread and horror,” but ultimately overcame his addiction after a tough withdrawal process.
At the time of his passing, Liam had been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, for two years. Previously, he had been engaged to influencer-turned-author Maya, with the couple having a tumultuous relationship from 2018 to 2022.
After their breakup, Maya depicted her time with Liam in her novel, “Looking Forward.” Shortly before his death, she posted a TikTok alleging that Liam had been harassing her from various iCloud accounts. In a shocking 2025 interview, Maya revealed that Liam struggled with “identity issues” during their relationship but emphasized that she doesn’t blame him for his challenges.
She disclosed that Liam’s drug use was the primary reason for their split and claimed he “did things to hurt me in ways I’ll never fully understand.” Maya stated, “I noticed the signs; I felt the distance. Ultimately, it wasn’t just the betrayals or addictions that led to our breakup – it was the realization that I had invested years in something that wasn’t what I thought it was. I don’t hold him responsible for his struggles.”
