A dedicated runner who completed the London Marathon shared his journey of facing cancer that caused fractures in his back. David Macartney, known for his athleticism, battled aggressive stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leaving him in excruciating pain and immobile. However, after a remarkable recovery, the 51-year-old is now in remission, capable of walking, and recently conquered Snowdon, a peak in north Wales.

In early 2022, David, residing in Hazel Grove, Stockport, noticed a small lump under his armpit. Initially dismissing it, he later consulted a doctor who raised concerns. The subsequent diagnosis was a shock, with an intense eight-week wait for confirmation. Facing the reality of stage 4 cancer was daunting, triggering fears of mortality and separation from his loved ones.

Supported by his wife and three children, David underwent rigorous chemotherapy at the renowned Christie hospital in Manchester, coupled with participation in a clinical trial. Although the treatment successfully eradicated the cancer, it came with severe repercussions, including a fractured spine in eleven places, drastically altering his active lifestyle.

Struggling to cope with the physical and mental toll, David found solace in the unwavering support of his physiotherapist and the Christie team, who guided him through pain management and rehabilitation. Slowly but steadily, he regained strength and confidence, achieving a significant milestone by climbing Snowdon almost a year after completing treatment.

Reflecting on his journey, David emphasized the importance of setting boundaries, focusing on facts rather than fear, and conserving energy for recovery. Despite enduring persistent pain, he learned to live authentically and purposefully post-cancer, acknowledging the enduring presence of fear but choosing to coexist with it.

Professor Richard Berman, an oncology expert at The Christie, highlighted David’s story as a testament to the holistic approach of supportive oncology, emphasizing the significance of aiding patients in leading fulfilling lives after battling cancer. Inspired by his experience, David aims to participate in the Manchester 10K to support The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. To sponsor him, click the provided link.
