Lancashire Police confirmed that Hammill was arrested and questioned before being released on bail following a sexual assault report involving a woman in her 40s. The incident was reported to have occurred on December 14th, leading to Hammill’s arrest by South Yorkshire Police on December 29th. Tragically, on December 30th, South Yorkshire Police informed Lancashire Police of Hammill’s death, prompting the closure of the investigation.
During the inquest into Hammill’s demise, it was revealed that he had left a note for his neighbor instructing them to contact the authorities and not enter his home. The coroner determined that the cause of death was hanging, emphasizing that Hammill had meticulously planned his actions.
