A father in a courtroom shocked everyone by admitting to the murder of his son and girlfriend with a smile on his face. David Huff, 43, confessed to shooting 32-year-old Yeraldith Tschudy and 11-year-old Jeremiah Huff in Syracuse, New York State in March 2025.

During the court proceedings, Huff smirked and chuckled as Judge Ted Limpert read out the charges against him. When questioned by the judge about his demeanor, Huff replied that he had a joke stuck in his head.

Despite denying shooting his son in the face, Huff admitted to both killings. The victims, Yeraldith and Jeremiah, were both fatally shot with a 12-gauge shotgun. Huff’s stepfather was also targeted but survived the attack.

Following the killings, Jeremiah’s mother, Samantha Gallup Peltier, alerted emergency services after receiving a distressing call from her son. Huff fled the scene but was apprehended by state police the next day.

After undergoing evaluation by mental health experts, it was determined that any mental impairment Huff may have had was likely due to substance abuse. Prosecutors mentioned uncertainty regarding Huff’s substance use on the night of the murders.

Despite being found mentally competent to stand trial, Huff opted to plead guilty to second-degree charges instead of first-degree murder. This decision may offer him a chance at parole when he is sentenced in the future.

In New York State, parole can be granted for second-degree murder convictions, typically after serving a specified period before being eligible for parole consideration. The sentencing for Huff will take place at a later date.
