“Green Leader Criticized for Police Response Concerns”

Published on

Zack Polanski expressed ongoing worries regarding the police handling of an antisemitic terror incident in north London despite facing significant criticism.

The Green leader recently issued an apology following a backlash triggered by his sharing of a post alleging that officers had aggressively mistreated a mentally ill man following his taser arrest. Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley cautioned against the accusation potentially influencing future actions and criticized those he labeled as “armchair experts” in a public statement.

While acknowledging that his social media repost was not the best approach, Polanski maintained his concerns about the police response to the Golders Green attack during a conversation with BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg. He emphasized the inappropriateness of the forum for such discussions and expressed a desire to address the issue privately after seeking a meeting with the commissioner.

As a member of the London assembly overseeing the Met Police, Polanski emphasized the importance of subjecting all public service personnel to scrutiny, even those displaying courage.

In a separate context, Polanski, who is of Jewish descent, disapproved of efforts to curb pro-Palestine demonstrations as a means of combatting antisemitism. He discouraged the use of the phrase “globalise the intifada” but affirmed his stance against regulating language.

The Prime Minister’s call for protesters to refrain from using certain phrases during Gaza marches was challenged by Polanski, who advocated for defending individuals’ rights to protest while discouraging specific language without enforcing strict controls.

Labour’s Communities Secretary, Steve Reed, criticized Polanski for questioning the police response to the antisemitic attack, labeling it as shameful and asserting that Polanski’s apology held no weight as he continued to undermine the actions of the police.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander condemned Polanski’s initial sharing of the critical social media post targeting the police, emphasizing the bravery and quick response of the officers involved in the challenging situation.

Recent suggestions by Keir Starmer to potentially ban certain protests and calls by Kemi Badenoch for a halt on pro-Palestine marches have stirred debate on protest regulations.

Following the terror incident in Golders Green where two Jewish individuals were stabbed, the UK raised its national threat level from substantial to severe. A review is underway to assess the impact of protests on societal unity and safety.
