Tracy-Ann Oberman MBE found herself stranded at the airport recently. The acclaimed actress shared that, despite her passport being valid until 2027, she encountered difficulties boarding a flight to Spain due to a discrepancy in the expiration date.
Known for her role as Chrissie Watts on the popular BBC series, “EastEnders,” Tracy-Ann expressed her frustration at the unexpected situation and reached out for assistance from both Ryanair and the Home Office.
Taking to Twitter to address her 112,000 followers, the 59-year-old actress recounted her experience of being denied boarding for a flight to Spain. She highlighted the confusion caused by new European regulations that deemed her passport expired in 2026, leading to her being stranded.
Subsequently, Tracy-Ann received advice from her online followers, with one pointing out the 10-year validity rule for passports, irrespective of the expiry date. This information was not prominently highlighted during the ticket booking process, she remarked.
Furthermore, Tracy-Ann sought clarification from Travel Expert Simon Calder regarding the issue. She mentioned that despite having a passport valid until 2027, she was informed that it was ineligible for travel due to the additional year from its issuance. Simon responded by outlining the necessary steps for addressing such situations, including rebooking flights, providing accommodation when needed, and compensating passengers accordingly.
The actress also emphasized that the passport validation process during booking did not alert her to any potential problems with the dates on her document. According to Citizens’ Advice, travelers are advised to renew passports if they have less than three months’ validity remaining while abroad, counting from the passport’s issue date.
Tracy-Ann expressed disappointment at missing out on a planned family holiday to Spain following her recent acting engagements. Despite her attempts to seek clarity from Ryanair, the airline declined to comment without specific booking details.
