Alan Titchmarsh Bids Farewell to Beloved Garden

Published on

Beloved gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh recently shared the heartfelt reasons for his decision to leave the garden he has cared for over the past twenty years. He expressed that he preferred to make the move now while he still had the ability to do so.

In an open article for BBC Gardeners’ World magazine, the well-known horticulturist and TV personality discussed his choice to exchange his impressive Grade II-listed residence in Hampshire for a new home in Surrey. Alan and his wife Alison recently sold their £3.5 million property to downsize to a more manageable single-storey bungalow.

Quoting Shakespeare, Alan wrote, “‘Parting is such sweet sorrow,'” which he felt aptly described saying goodbye to a garden he had cultivated for nearly a quarter of a century. While some might question his decision to leave a place so dear to him, Alan explained that maintaining a four-acre garden had become increasingly challenging, requiring significant effort and continuous assistance.

At 77 years old, Alan recognized the physical demands of tending to such a large garden and the practicalities of aging. He humorously mentioned that despite feeling youthful, he could not rely on eternal good health and wanted to leave on his own terms rather than being forced by circumstances.

Despite parting ways with his cherished garden, Alan’s love for horticulture remains strong. He plans to create a new, more manageable garden spanning approximately one and a half acres. He expressed confidence in his ability to develop and maintain this new garden independently after laying the groundwork.

While acknowledging the emotional difficulty of leaving his property, Alan emphasized that the garden held even greater sentimental value for him than the house. Reflecting on the transformation of the garden over the years, from its humble beginnings to a place where he raised his children and spent time with his grandchildren, Alan felt a deep sense of attachment.

In his farewell, Alan expressed his gratitude for the memories the garden holds and acknowledged the grief of leaving behind a place filled with love. Despite the bittersweet departure, he looked ahead optimistically, assuring readers that his new garden would become his next sanctuary.
