A source within Burnham’s circle dismissed claims of an imminent challenge, emphasizing Burnham’s approach of fostering a constructive relationship with Starmer. While several cabinet ministers have shown support for Burnham, the PM has not visited the constituency despite promising to do so. Burnham recently disclosed his intention to enter a leadership contest during an appearance on Question Time.

In the Makerfield by-election, Burnham is considered the frontrunner against Reform’s candidate, Robert Kenyon, who has faced criticism for derogatory remarks targeting women.
