Andy Burnham Delays Potential PM Challenge

Published on

Andy Burnham is reportedly not planning to immediately challenge the Prime Minister if he emerges victorious in the Makerfield by-election, according to sources at the Mirror. The Labour leadership contender has expressed his willingness to participate in a leadership race to succeed Keir Starmer. However, it is believed that Burnham will refrain from announcing a challenge in the initial days following a potential win in the Makerfield by-election.

Instead, the Mayor of Greater Manchester is aiming to engage with Starmer to establish a timeline for his departure. Despite intentions to remove the PM, Burnham’s campaign has focused on maintaining positive relations with Downing Street.

A source within Burnham’s circle dismissed claims of an imminent challenge, emphasizing Burnham’s approach of fostering a constructive relationship with Starmer. While several cabinet ministers have shown support for Burnham, the PM has not visited the constituency despite promising to do so. Burnham recently disclosed his intention to enter a leadership contest during an appearance on Question Time.

In the Makerfield by-election, Burnham is considered the frontrunner against Reform’s candidate, Robert Kenyon, who has faced criticism for derogatory remarks targeting women. The PM has hinted at offering Burnham a Cabinet position if he returns to Westminster, cautioning potential challengers and highlighting an upcoming mayoral election in Greater Manchester.

Starmer expressed his admiration for Burnham’s capabilities, indicating a desire for his involvement in the government. However, a senior source ruled out Burnham assuming the role, citing his detachment from government shortcomings as an advantage.

Meanwhile, Wes Streeting hinted at a possible challenge to Starmer’s leadership as early as the following week. Streeting urged the PM to reflect on his position before any contest is triggered. The Labour figure asserted having the necessary support to initiate a challenge against the PM, emphasizing the importance of clarity amid uncertainty. Streeting linked the delay in triggering a contest to the impending by-election.
