Police responded to reports of a firearm threat in Teignmouth over the weekend, leading to an armed presence in the town. Concerns were raised on social media about a possible armed individual near Back Beach on Saturday night, prompting a swift reaction from Devon and Cornwall Police.
Authorities were alerted to an assault incident on Queen Street close to the town center around 8.55pm. Upon arrival, law enforcement confiscated a non-functional firearm, although specific details were not disclosed. A man in his 60s was apprehended by the police armed response unit on suspicion of GBH with intent, affray, and possession of a replica weapon. He has since been released on police bail.
The victim of the assault sustained a facial injury during the altercation. Eye witnesses observed a significant police presence near the Ship Inn pub on Queen Street, where the road was temporarily closed off.
A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police stated, “We received a call at 8.55pm on Saturday, May 30 regarding an assault on Queen Street, Teignmouth. It was also reported that a firearm was involved with threats made. Following this, armed officers took action, detaining a man in his 60s on suspicion of GBH with intent, affray, and possession of an imitation firearm. The injured party suffered a facial laceration, and a non-functional firearm was recovered from the scene.”
