In Louisiana, a tragic incident unfolded on Sunday morning as a 31-year-old army veteran, Shamar Elkins, allegedly shot and killed eight children across three locations in Shreveport. Just hours before the killings, Elkins had shared a happy photo of his daughter on Facebook, showing a stark contrast to the horrific events that followed.
The victims, aged between 1 and 12 years old, were revealed at a press conference, eliciting shock from the audience. Elkins had also recently posted about spending time with his children, including a picture from an Easter church service, but he had also alluded to struggles with mental health in his social media posts.
The violent outburst occurred around 6 am, resulting in ten individuals being shot during a domestic conflict. Elkins, after the attack, attempted a carjacking and was later fatally shot by police following a pursuit.
The crime scene spanned multiple locations, including residences on West 79th Street and Harrison Street, creating a complex investigation for authorities. Tragically, seven of the children who lost their lives were Elkins’ own.
Public figures expressed their condolences, with Police Chief Wayne Smith and Shreveport mayor Tom Arceneaux sharing their sympathies for the affected families and calling for community support in the wake of the senseless tragedy.
