Black Sabbath icon Bill Ward has disclosed that he now relies on a wheelchair, a year after the passing of his bandmate Ozzy Osbourne. The esteemed drummer, who was part of the band with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and the late Ozzy Osbourne, explained that he requires a wheelchair for extended walking distances.
Bill emphasized his intention to be transparent with fans regarding his health status to avoid any misconceptions about his retirement or health condition.
Providing an update on his health, he stated, “I need to use a wheelchair more publicly now, especially in airports or public events. Although I can still walk, I find it challenging to walk long distances without needing to rest, hence the need for a wheelchair. I turned 78 on May 5, 2026.”
Despite his health challenges, Bill clarified that he has not retired or given up on his passion for drumming. He expressed his enduring commitment to music and drumming, highlighting his continued ability to play at a high level at the age of 78.
Addressing any potential rumors, Bill wanted to assure fans that seeing him in a wheelchair does not indicate retirement or poor health but is simply a means of convenience for travel purposes.
He concluded his message by affirming his dedication to music and expressing gratitude to his supporters, promising to continue rocking for as long as possible.
Bill’s health update comes following the tragic death of Ozzy Osbourne last year, who battled Parkinson’s disease and faced various health challenges throughout his career.
Ozzy, accompanied by Bill, headlined a farewell concert with Black Sabbath called “Back to the Beginning” in Birmingham, where he performed seated on a throne at the advice of medical professionals.
