A Bristol woman who tragically lost her life in an intentional house explosion sustained severe blast injuries, as revealed in an inquest.
The incident on May 3 in Sterncourt Road resulted in the deaths of Jo Shaw, 35, and her former partner, Ryan Kelly, 41. According to Avon and Somerset Police, a call was made from inside the property reporting a domestic incident shortly before the explosion.
Witnesses indicated that Kelly arrived at the location with what appeared to be a grenade, leading to the fatal detonation. Before the blast, Shaw reportedly guided a child to play outside on a trampoline during a dispute.
Authorities have classified the explosion as deliberate and determined Shaw’s death as a homicide, with no additional suspects being sought. Three others, including a child, sustained minor injuries in the incident.
During an inquest at Avon Coroner’s Court, it was stated that Shaw was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. The cause of death was cited as penetrating fragmentation blast injuries to the chest and pelvis.
Described as a devoted single mother and personal assistant, Shaw was formally identified by her family. Further investigations and reports from medical professionals and authorities were requested by the coroner, who scheduled a subsequent hearing for August 11, 2026.
In a heartfelt tribute, Shaw’s family emphasized her warmth, kindness, and selfless actions, particularly highlighting her love and dedication to her child. They requested privacy as they mourned their loss and praised Shaw’s bravery and protective nature during the tragic event.
Known as Jo, Shaw was remembered by her family for her vibrant personality and ability to forge lasting connections. Police reports detailed the events leading up to the explosion, including a distress call reporting a forced entry and the possession of an explosive device.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the explosion, with neighboring properties evacuated as a precaution. Searches confirmed the safety of the area, while investigations also extended to the residence of the deceased former partner with no need for evacuations.
