“Céline Dion Overcomes Illness for Paris Residency”

Published on

Céline Dion is making final preparations for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris, set to kick off next month, while shedding light on her battle with illness and the treatments she has undergone. The renowned Canadian singer shared in an exclusive profile with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder brought about intense pain, escalating in 2020 to the point where she struggled to walk on certain days, necessitating high doses of Valium for relief.

Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that typically worsens over time, affecting only one or two individuals per million. Its symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no definitive cause or approved treatment for the disorder, other therapeutic approaches can help manage its effects.

Prior to her diagnosis, Céline Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to pursue extensive treatment post-diagnosis.

Having halted all performances after the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dion is gearing up to make a comeback to the stage this September. Her rigorous recovery routine involves a combination of medications, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice weekly, along with biweekly ballet classes, in preparation for her upcoming shows.

Describing Dion as someone constantly on the move, Harper’s reporter Jazmine Hughes noted her aversion to staying still for fear of experiencing stiffness once more. The singer regards her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a miraculous second chance that she deeply appreciates.

Feeling strong, excited, and slightly anxious, Céline Dion expressed readiness to return to the limelight. Her Paris residency, spanning 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year, marks her highly anticipated comeback to the stage.
