Over 200 individuals have submitted reports to health authorities suspecting that deaths may be linked to the components found in weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, based on recent data. Information gathered from the Yellow Card Scheme of the Medicine and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) reveals that more than 200 cases have been reported where people believe deaths were associated with these medications, along with over 150,000 instances of adverse reactions. These reports span various brands and highlight issues like gastrointestinal complications experienced while using these treatments.
Public reports of deaths are focused on the active ingredients in popular injections and diabetes therapies like Ozempic. The MHRA data discloses that there have been 106,189 adverse reactions, including gastrointestinal problems, and 120 reported deaths related to tirzepatide, marketed as Mounjaro. In addition, individuals have reported 48,089 reactions and 59 deaths suspected to be linked to semaglutide, the key component in the weight-loss drug Wegovy.
Semaglutide is also utilized in diabetes treatments such as Ozempic and Rybelsus. A total of 4,491 adverse reactions and 37 deaths have been reported as potentially associated with liraglutide, sold under the brand name Saxenda.
The MHRA emphasizes that adverse reactions reported through the Yellow Card Scheme do not necessarily indicate that the medicine caused the death or reaction, only that the reporter suspects a connection. An MHRA spokesperson stated that these reports should be viewed in the context of the large number of GLP-1 prescriptions issued in the UK.
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper mentioned that a robust regulatory system is in place to record and analyze any adverse reactions to weight loss drugs. She highlighted the extensive monitoring carried out by health experts to ensure safety in all aspects.
In the UK, three types of weight-loss injections – Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Saxenda – are available through the NHS, with Wegovy being the most popular choice. Recent estimates from University College London suggest that a significant number of individuals have utilized weight-loss drugs, surpassing the initial targets set by NHS England.
Researchers noted that around 4.9 million adults in Great Britain have either used or expressed interest in using weight-loss drugs, indicating a substantial demand for these medications. The potential for misuse and the need for detailed data monitoring are crucial due to the large number of individuals using these drugs without medical supervision.
Common side effects of weight loss drugs, according to NHS inform, may include constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, headaches, fatigue, and low blood sugar. Less frequent adverse effects could involve vision changes, kidney issues, pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, or allergic reactions.
