Neighbors of Shamar Elkins, the suspect in the killing of eight children aged one to 12, recounted the moment they witnessed him fleeing the residence.
Authorities revealed that the Louisiana shooter, who targeted two homes early Sunday, fatally shot seven of his own children, injured their mother, and killed an additional child. This tragic event marks the deadliest mass shooting in the US in over two years.
According to Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon, Shamar Elkins first shot the mother and then took the lives of the eight children. A total of 10 individuals were shot, with two women surviving the harrowing ordeal. One of the women sustained critical injuries, including a gunshot wound to the head.
The incident transpired on Sunday morning when the gunman arrived at a location in Shreveport where the horrific massacre unfolded.
Following the shootings, Elkins drove to Harrison Street, approximately a quarter-mile away, in a stolen vehicle. After a high-speed pursuit by law enforcement, he proceeded to a third location, where he was eventually shot and killed by officers.
A resident, Liza Demming, residing near the crime scene, captured footage on her security camera showing the suspect fleeing the area. She described hearing gunshots and observing the suspect running out of the house.
Later, Demming discovered the body of a child on a rooftop near her home, expressing shock and mentioning that the suspect had recently interacted with the children.
Pastor Marty T. Johnson Sr., who owns one of the properties where the shootings occurred, mentioned that the family involved had rented the residence from a staff member but had no personal interactions with them.
Louisiana State Police confirmed that their detectives were called in by the local authorities to investigate the incident. State police emphasized that no officers were injured during the pursuit that ended in Bossier City.
State police are urging individuals with any relevant pictures, videos, or information to come forward and share it with the detectives.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and US House Speaker Mike Johnson, both expressing sorrow, lauded the law enforcement response to the tragedy.
The detectives involved in the case believe that the shooting was solely a domestic-related incident.
