A shocking video captured the distressing moment when two defenseless dogs were pulled behind a car while concerned witnesses alerted law enforcement. The dogs, a German Shepherd named Marzipan and a pit bull named Nougat, were tethered to the back of a red Volkswagen Passat and struggled to keep pace as the vehicle moved along the road. Onlookers expressed outrage at the scene, with one bystander shouting about the inhumane treatment of the animals.

Nougat eventually managed to break free, prompting the driver to then gather the dogs and place them inside the car before reportedly fleeing the area. Witnesses promptly notified the New York Police Department (NYPD) after identifying the owner and driver as Dan Bujor, aged 68, who was allegedly operating the vehicle in Long Island. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Bujor faced charges of animal cruelty.

Describing the incident, Katz condemned the defendant’s actions of tying the dogs to the car and dragging them through the streets of Long Island City. She commended the individuals who reported the incident and the swift response of the NYPD in apprehending the accused and securing the animals, now under the care of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Both dogs were taken to the ASPCA in Manhattan for evaluation. Marzipan, aged 2, was found to have a ruptured eardrum, while Nougat, estimated to be between 2 and 4 years old, had abrasions on her paw pads, skin inflammation, and diarrhea. Howard Lawrence, ASPCA Vice President of Humane Law Enforcement, expressed deep concern over the disturbing footage, highlighting the ongoing issue of animal abuse in New York City.

Bujor, a resident of Long Island City, was formally charged with offenses including overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals, failure to provide care, and driving without a license. If convicted, Bujor could face up to a year in jail. The ASPCA, along with other organizations, continues to care for the dogs and other vulnerable animals impacted by cruelty, emphasizing the importance of addressing and preventing such incidents in the city.
