A Spanish airport faced a temporary shutdown during the weekend due to a drone sighting. Cesar Manrique-Lanzarote Airport ceased operations just after 4 pm on Sunday as a drone was detected in the vicinity, leading to air traffic controllers halting activities for safety reasons. The airport in Lanzarote experienced delays, with incoming flights instructed to circle before landing. Although there was uncertainty about the impact on UK flights, the runway closure lasted nearly an hour before normal operations resumed.
Authorities are investigating the drone operator, as unauthorized drone use near airports can result in hefty fines, reaching up to €200,000 for recreational use and up to €4.5 million for professional purposes. This incident is reminiscent of a similar occurrence last year when drones disrupted flights at Fuenteventura Airport.
In a separate incident on the same day, passengers were evacuated from Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport due to smoke in the boarding area. The smoke, caused by a café fire within the airport, led to disruptions with some travelers missing their flights. Despite the inconvenience, the situation was swiftly handled by airport authorities, and outgoing flights experienced only minor delays.
