“Drug-Related Crimes Surge Nationwide, Hotspots Identified”

Published on

Drug-related crimes have seen a significant increase nationwide, with specific regions emerging as hotspots for serious issues, according to recent data analysis. While many types of criminal activities have decreased over the past year, drug-related offenses have surged by 18%, totaling more than 230,000 documented incidents involving drug trafficking or distribution, often associated with criminal organizations. The Home Office statistics indicate that drug crimes are most prevalent in urban areas, particularly in the North.

Certain regions report more than 20 drug-related crimes daily, some of which involve violent incidents where gangs are implicated in drug-related homicides. In Liverpool alone, the police recorded 7,770 drug crimes in 2025, marking a 19% rise from the previous year, primarily attributed to increased arrests and targeted operations against criminal gangs. This figure translates to over 20 drug crimes per day or one crime every 68 minutes, making it the highest recorded number in England and Wales.

Incidents of violence linked to drug-related activities have also been reported in Liverpool, with two shootings occurring in the Toxteth area and a teenage girl being shot in the legs earlier this year. Tragically, the death of 19-year-old Ellis Cox near the Liverpool Loop Line two years ago was a result of a turf war between rival drug gangs in the region, highlighting the dangerous consequences of such criminal activities.

Beyond Liverpool, other major cities have also experienced spikes in drug crimes, with Manchester recording 6,631 incidents (a 31% increase), Birmingham reporting 4,680 cases (up by 23%), and Leeds documenting 3,114 crimes (a 7% rise). Notably, Liverpool has the highest rate of drug offenses, with 15 recorded for every 1,000 residents, followed by Westminster, Manchester, Islington, and Knowsley with rates ranging from nine to 13 offenses per 1,000 residents.

The escalating drug crime rates have prompted law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts in combating organized criminal activities, particularly targeting county lines gangs and disrupting illicit drug supply chains. Initiatives like the “Clear Hold Build” framework have been implemented nationally to tackle serious organized crime, resulting in significant arrests, charges, and convictions. Police officials emphasize the need for proactive policing strategies to address drug offenses effectively and prevent associated criminal behaviors such as violence and intimidation.

In a recent update, the National Police Chiefs Council announced substantial progress in combating serious organized crime, with a significant number of arrests, charges, and lengthy sentences imposed on offenders. Deputy Chief Constable Gunney, the National Serious Organized Crime lead, highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of criminal activities to prevent further escalation of violence and criminal behavior. The collaborative efforts between specialized law enforcement units and local policing teams have shown promising results in disrupting criminal networks and enhancing community safety.
