After 173 years of presence on the British High Street, the iconic Halifax brand is scheduled to disappear as Lloyds takes over. Despite the rebranding, the memories of Halifax will endure.
Lloyds Banking Group, the owner of Halifax, has revealed plans to rebrand all Halifax branches as Lloyds by 2027, halting new account openings under the Halifax name. This transition may come as a surprise to many customers who fondly remember Halifax’s prominent TV advertising dominance in the 2000s, featuring catchy jingles and the unforgettable face of Howard Brown.
Howard, now 59, made his debut in a Halifax TV commercial on Boxing Day in 2000, dancing to a parody of Tom Jones’ “Sexbomb” before engaging in whimsical antics on a farm. Despite the advert predating the era of YouTube and TikTok, it became a viral sensation.
Following the success of the commercials, Howard became a household name, with subsequent ads resonating across the UK. However, the financial crisis of 2009 prompted a shift in the banking sector’s advertising strategies, leading to a decline in large-scale campaigns featuring Howard. Nonetheless, he continued to work on smaller projects for Halifax before departing from the company in 2011.
Howard remained in demand, receiving offers from various banks and exploring opportunities in musical theatre. His television appearances extended to commercials and guest spots on popular shows, showcasing his versatility beyond his Halifax persona.
In 2022, Howard made headlines by criticizing Halifax’s decision to include pronouns on employees’ name badges, deeming it inappropriate for a service-oriented industry. His dissent culminated in the release of a song titled “What Happened?”, which faced mixed reception upon its launch in 2023.
While Howard’s journey post-Halifax has been multifaceted, his enduring popularity and ventures into advocacy and entertainment continue to shape his post-banking career.
