“Families Push for Social Media Ban to Protect Children”

Published on

Bereaved families, who lost their children due to harmful content on social media, are set to bring their campaign for a ban similar to Australia’s to Downing Street today. Prior to the conclusion of a significant consultation on online child safety, a group of parents will meet with Keir Starmer to express their concerns about the unregulated nature of the internet. This development follows an appeal made by activist Lauren Cowell in the Mirror, urging the Prime Minister to address the families’ issues directly.

Government officials have been exploring various measures to regulate social media, including a potential ban, restricting usage durations, and implementing curfews. Ellen Roome, who suspects her son’s death was linked to a TikTok challenge, advocates for raising the minimum age to 16 until tech companies can ensure safety. She emphasized the struggle of parents dealing with the aftermath of such tragedies and stressed the need for accountability from technology firms.

Echoing Roome’s sentiments, Lord Nash, leading the ban campaign in the House of Lords, emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing restrictions for children under 16. However, not all activists endorse a ban, with Ian Russell suggesting enforcement of existing laws instead. Keir Starmer has shown readiness for decisive action to address the issue, signaling upcoming changes to the current status quo.

While the government is expected to unveil its strategy post-consultation, former Deputy PM Angela Rayner has urged for an under-16 social media ban. The urgency of the situation was highlighted in a podcast discussion where Rayner and others emphasized the need for prompt decision-making. A government spokesperson reiterated the aim to create a safe online environment, mentioning ongoing consultations to gather feedback and the introduction of the Online Safety Act to enhance user protection from harmful online content.
