Nigel Farage is set to face a diverse range of opponents in an upcoming by-election centered around the theme of “people versus establishment.” The leader of Reform UK made the decision to step down amidst financial scrutiny, emphasizing that the residents of Clacton should be the ultimate arbiters of his actions.
With major parties like Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, and the Green Party opting out of the August 13 contest, Farage’s primary contender now appears to be the satirical figure known as Count Binface. The by-election will feature a staggering 33 rival candidates, setting a potential record for parliamentary elections.
The Tendring District Council revealed that the previous record of 26 candidates was set during the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008. The Mirror examines the lineup of contenders challenging Farage after the official candidate list was disclosed by local authorities.
Among the intriguing candidates is Count Binface, the comedic persona of Jonathan David Harvey, known for his work on shows like The Thick of It and Have I Got News For You. Describing himself as an “intergalactic space warrior” and leader of the Recyclons from Sigma IX, Count Binface has engaged in past electoral battles against prominent figures like Rishi Sunak, Andy Burnham, and Boris Johnson.
Formerly recognized as Lord Buckethead, Count Binface issued a call for mainstream parties to withdraw in Clacton, positioning himself as a unifying candidate committed to constructing affordable housing. Meanwhile, Laurence Fox, a former actor and leader of the Reclaim Party, announced his candidacy, criticizing the current state of politics and emphasizing his focus on representing Clacton’s interests.
In addition to these candidates, Howling Laud Hope, the leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, is also in the running, outlining whimsical policies such as introducing airbags in the Stock Exchange and painting grey squirrels red. Other notable candidates include John Stevens from the Rejoin EU Party and Luke Worley, a former Dating Naked contestant running as an Independent, pledging to enhance local infrastructure and support independent businesses.
