“Generous Donors Raise Over £20K for James Bulger’s Gravestone”

Published on

Denise Fergus, the mother of James Bulger, has expressed gratitude towards a group of generous individuals who have raised over £20,000 to fund a new gravestone for her son. The incident occurred after vandals targeted the child’s resting place earlier this year, damaging two cherubs on the headstone. In response to this heartbreaking act, a GoFundMe page was set up, and donations quickly surpassed £23,000, enabling Denise to repair the grave temporarily and plan for a more secure replacement in the future.

The funds raised beyond the gravestone project will be directed to the James Bulger Memorial Trust, which offers assistance to families experiencing similar tragedies. Denise shared her emotional response to the support received, emphasizing the profound impact of the online community’s generosity on her and her family.

The damage to James’ grave, which included the destruction of cherished cherubs, deeply affected Denise, who was moved to tears upon seeing the desecration of the memorial. The unexpected influx of donations through the GoFundMe page exceeded all expectations, reflecting the enduring love and support for James from the local community and beyond.

Merseyside Police reported the vandalism incident, noting the damage to the headstone’s marble angels and the theft of a teddy bear. Despite efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, the culprits remain at large. The swift response from supporters online, with over 1,700 donors contributing to the cause, demonstrated a remarkable outpouring of compassion and solidarity for James and his family.

Denise expressed her profound gratitude for the generosity, emphasizing the significance of leaving a lasting legacy for James through the restoration of the grave and the installation of new marble cherubs. The repaired cherubs served as a symbol of remembrance and love, embodying the continued support for James and his memory.

The James Bulger Memorial Trust, established by Denise and her husband Stuart following their son’s tragic death, provides aid to families facing adversity. The surplus donations will be allocated to sustain the trust’s initiatives, such as a holiday lodge near Blackpool, offering respite to families in need.

Despite ongoing efforts to enhance security at the cemetery, including increased patrols, the vandals responsible for the damage have yet to be apprehended. Denise stressed the importance of holding the perpetrators accountable, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
