“Hinge’s AI Helps Young Adults Start Conversations on Dating Apps”

Published on

Single individuals in their 20s can utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to initiate conversations on dating apps if they struggle with taking the first step, according to recent claims. Jackie Jantos, the head of the dating app Hinge, mentioned that many daters desire love but find it challenging to overcome their hesitations in putting themselves out there. The app’s AI functionality generates conversation starters not to write messages for users but to assist them in expressing their true selves.

Despite concerns raised by relationship experts about dating app fatigue and a shift towards more traditional face-to-face meetings, Hinge has seen a continuous increase in its user base in the UK. Established in 2012 and under the ownership of Match Group, which also operates Tinder and Match.com, Hinge prides itself on its mission to facilitate meaningful relationships and not keep users on the platform indefinitely.

While Tinder remains the most popular dating app, its usage has slightly declined over the past three years, with Hinge quickly catching up. Following closely behind Hinge in user popularity are Bumble and Grindr. Notably, the number of adults in the UK using Hinge rose to 1.5 million in the year leading up to May 2025, up from 1.4 million the previous year, while Tinder’s audience decreased from 1.9 million to 1.5 million over the same period.

Hinge offers a free basic version and premium tiers priced at £24.99 per month or £74.99 for six months. The app leverages AI technology to enhance the dating experience, providing personalized matches based on user preferences such as age, distance, and interests. Through continuous learning, the app refines its predictive capabilities to suggest potential matches and offers optional AI tools to optimize user profiles.

By offering prompts like asking about local coffee shops or seeking movie recommendations, Hinge aims to encourage conversations among its users. According to Jackie Jantos, a significant portion of Hinge’s user base consists of Generation Z, who spend less time engaging in face-to-face interactions compared to previous generations, leading to increased feelings of loneliness.

The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated social isolation among young adults, disrupting their opportunities for in-person social interactions and relationship development. Hinge’s AI tool assists users in enhancing their profiles and starting conversations, with the intention of boosting confidence rather than replacing genuine human interactions.
