Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen announced his resignation at the end of this week due to ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident late last year. Serving as the Scarborough North MP since 2015, Chen revealed that the accident left him with severe health problems, hindering his ability to travel to Ottawa regularly for his parliamentary duties. After deliberating with his family, Chen made the decision to step down from his position.

Before entering politics, Chen had a notable tenure as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. In response to his resignation, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s efforts in advocating for youth and combating racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors.

Chen’s resignation adds to a series of departing MPs this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, who are also set to vacate their seats. Additionally, Conservative MP Larry Brock announced his resignation in mid-September to pursue a position in the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to leave his Montreal seat to run provincially for Québec Solidaire in October.

Chen’s resignation is scheduled for Saturday, marking the end of his parliamentary term.
