A man has been sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for encouraging the sexual abuse of a baby and an eight-year-old child. Mark Craig, 56, exchanged explicit messages with an individual he believed had access to young girls, including a baby. Unbeknownst to him, the person he was communicating with was an undercover police officer conducting an investigation.
Following a police operation by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), Craig was arrested and charged with various offenses related to child sexual abuse. He pleaded guilty to arranging and facilitating a child sex offense, producing indecent images of children, and distributing indecent images of children at Newcastle Crown Court.
Craig, a resident of the Westerhope area in Newcastle, appeared in court and received the lengthy prison sentence. NEROCU Detective Inspector Hull commended the officers for their diligent work in apprehending a dangerous individual who posed a significant threat to children. The investigation was part of Operation Sentinel, a regional initiative aimed at combatting serious and organized crime, particularly online offenses targeting children.
