The inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham experienced a setback during the starting line preparations. The first day of practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar event in Canada had to be canceled on Friday due to unfinished track construction, leading to a delay in the final safety inspection by officials. To make up for the lost time, organizers plan to compress all the activities scheduled for the first day into the Saturday schedule.
This year marks the debut of Markham as the host city for the event, which was relocated from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, its home since its inception in 1986. Expressing disappointment over the delay, IndyCar president J. Douglas Boles mentioned the significant fan turnout as a testament to the sport’s popularity in Ontario.
Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, shared mixed feelings about the delay. While emphasizing the importance of ensuring track safety, they also expressed the desire for smoother event execution to maintain fan interest.
The decision to move the event from downtown Toronto to Markham was announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September, with the track layout spanning between Kennedy Road, Enterprise Boulevard, the Unionville GO tracks, and Highway 407. Despite incomplete features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing modifications, preparations continued for the event.
Government investments totaling $5 million were announced in support of the Indy event, with Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti revealing the city’s substantial capital spending for infrastructure upgrades related to the race. Fans gathered around the track in Markham, enjoying the activities and favorable weather conditions.
As the event progresses into the weekend, Saturday is expected to be a busy day with multiple practice sessions and qualifying rounds scheduled. Participating race series include the USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and the NASCAR Canada Series, adding to the excitement of the Indy weekend.
Despite the challenges faced in the lead-up to the event, organizers and fans alike remain optimistic about the upcoming races and look forward to a successful Indy weekend in Markham.
