Measles Alert at Universal Studios Hollywood

Published on

British travelers planning a trip to one of the world’s largest theme parks have been alerted following a measles-infected visitor spending 11 hours there.

Health officials in Los Angeles issued an urgent notice after confirming that a person with measles visited Universal Studios, Hollywood, on July 26, between 10am and 9pm. The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was contagious during their entire visit, raising concerns that thousands of park visitors might have been exposed to the virus.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is actively tracing and informing individuals who may have interacted with the infected visitor. With Universal Studios Hollywood attracting approximately 9.6 million visitors annually, equivalent to around 26,000 daily, it stands as one of California’s busiest tourist spots and a popular destination for British holidaymakers.

Measles, known as one of the most contagious diseases globally, can infect up to nine out of 10 unvaccinated individuals exposed to it. The virus spreads through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, remaining airborne for up to two hours after departure.

Dr. Muntu Davis, the Los Angeles County Public Health Officer, advised anyone present at the park on that day to ensure they are fully immunized against measles. He emphasized the importance of confirming immunity and receiving the MMR vaccine, especially before traveling or attending crowded events during the summer.

Authorities emphasized that the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine remains the most effective defense against measles infection, reducing the risk by approximately 97% after two doses. Initial symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed by a distinctive red rash that starts on the face and spreads across the body days later.

Measles can lead to severe complications, especially in infants, pregnant women, individuals with weakened immune systems, and those unvaccinated. In critical cases, it can result in pneumonia, brain inflammation, hospitalization, and, rarely, death.

Individuals experiencing symptoms after visiting the theme park are advised to stay at home, avoid public places, and contact a healthcare provider by phone before seeking medical attention to prevent spreading the infection to others.
