The Met Office has issued alerts for potential power cuts in six areas as they prepare for thunderstorms and rain on Tuesday.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for all of Northern Ireland from midday until 9pm on Tuesday, with the possibility of short-term power and service disruptions. The Met Office advised residents to take necessary precautions and be prepared for potential power outages by gathering essential items like torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.

According to the national weather agency, showers are expected to develop in the morning and intensify in the afternoon, potentially leading to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. The forecast predicts significant downpours, with 20 to 30mm of rain expected in a short period. Strong winds, hail, and localized heavy showers are also possible, but conditions are expected to improve gradually by the evening.

In addition to power cuts, residents in the affected areas are advised to assess the risk of flash flooding and make necessary preparations. It is recommended to check road conditions before traveling, irrespective of the mode of transport.

The Met Office emphasized the importance of seeking shelter during thunderstorms and avoiding exposure to lightning near trees or elevated structures. The forecast also includes showers in Scotland and western regions of the UK, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in the north, scattered showers in the south, warm and humid conditions, and windy weather in the north.
