Nipah can be transmitted from animals to humans and also through contaminated food or direct human contact. The mortality rate for those infected is estimated to range from 40% to 75%, as reported by the UK Health Security Agency.
The Nipah virus was initially identified in 1999 during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia and Singapore. While fruit bats are known to be carriers of the virus, evidence suggests it can infect other animals such as pigs, dogs, cats, goats, horses, and sheep. Currently, there is no confirmed treatment for a Nipah virus infection.
