The family of a beloved chef, known as a “gentle giant,” expressed outrage over the sentence given to the man who fatally punched him. Cemal John Yilmaz, 29, tragically passed away after being struck by Royal Marine Commando Joseph Jones, 22, during a night out in Exmouth, Devon. Described as a sudden and aggressive assault, Cemal, originally from Manchester, was knocked unconscious by a swift punch to his chin as Jones celebrated with fellow marines at local bars.

The grieving family shared their distress over the three-and-a-half-year prison term handed to Jones for manslaughter. In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Cemal’s parents, Ann and Ozkan, revealed their intent to appeal the lenient sentence and raise awareness about the dangers of single-punch incidents leading to death. Ann recounted the heart-wrenching experience of losing her son unexpectedly and emphasized the need to highlight the risks associated with such violent acts.

Recalling the tragic event, Ann described how Cemal innocently engaged with Jones and other marines before being struck without provocation, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately claimed his life. Despite immediate medical attention, Cemal succumbed to his injuries at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth four days after the attack.

Remembered by his family as a remarkable and altruistic individual who brought light to others, Cemal’s loved ones have been grappling with the circumstances surrounding his untimely death following Jones’s sentencing. The Marine voluntarily presented himself to Exeter Police station the day after the incident and was subsequently charged with manslaughter, leading to his sentencing at Exeter Crown Court. Jones pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to serve a portion of his three-and-a-half-year sentence before becoming eligible for release on license.

Expressing disbelief and disappointment over the verdict, Ann criticized the sentence as inadequate and called for stricter penalties for offenders involved in fatal single-punch attacks.
